it-runmers: a THEY MAY well be two of the mosi attractive modera - day potiticians anywhere, bul they stand in 4 league by themselves in British Columbia, [tis a tale of two Camp- bells. If British tabloids are a judge of anything, it can be said that the world is intrigued by the decision _ Kim Campbell is soon to make. Will Canada erupt into KIM- Mania as some observers have suggested? The role of front-runner ina leadership race is not a comforta- ble one. The leader is everyone's target. Euphoria and band-wagons are impossible to predict, but if the favorite is not well over the horizon by the stretch drive, con- vention day hecomes a circus. __- No one shoots at whomever is - in second place; or 10th place for ' that matter. And the leader carries into the final day a campaign that becomes so heavy it suffocates. The first rocket — exploding with apparent envy — was dispat- ched by Senator Pat Carney, a catty suggestion that prime minis- teria) material required more than mere pin-up photographs. Another prominent Tory who suggested that Kim Campbell has not had much experience in high office, seems to have forgotten that Brian Mulroney had never run for alderman, let alone Parliament, before he became teader of the progressive Conser- vative party. And Campbell's cabinet experi- ence exceeds what Pierre Trudeau had behind him when his star shot upward in 1968. ; Many are drawing parallels be- tween Trudeau and Campbell, a rather absurd notion. Sirnilarities include the justice portfolio, academic credentiats, a keen intellect, street smarts and a personal detachment from the po- litical machine. - But it ends there. Kim Camptell enjoys life and people. It shines through. She can be delightfully witty. One sensed that Trudeau. . ’ respected no one but himself, His only humor was sarcasm, in- variably designed to hurt. But, by 1968, Pierre Trudeau Customer App © a OPEN LINES was an often published philoso- pher.and social crusader. It’s hard to say what Kim Campbell stands for. This is a weakness she must address. This was Pat Carney’s point. The front-runner has a splendid luxury in these events. While everybody else must scramble to stake out 2 foundation, media at- tention remains squarely on the perceived leader. Huge numbers of party members hedge their bets until the decision is made. Kim Campbell can now demand the best: money, campaign management (Pat Kinsella?), staff and policy papers. Others can shake the tree and her streigth will be intact. She's the one vow doing the shaking. - Quite a few of her colleagues are falling out. Prime Minister Mulroney has said he will be scrupulously im- partial. Don Mazankowski — the mast respected and powerful Tory — has dampened attempts to get him to run. Therefore, the Maz, publicly or privately, will dominate the sclec- tion process. This is the king or -queen-maker, Gordon Campbell is sitting in an even more fascinating position. He is the Mayor of Vancouver, at sccure for a dynasty. if he so chooses. He is chairman of the Greater Vancouver Regional District and president of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, Still just 45, he enjoys a na- tional reputation, Campbell is the-pure, unadul- terated non-partisan, thoughtful, frec-enterprise politician. He has the old regiment would shape up fast. And, secure in his next term as Vancouver mayor and president of everything else not resident in Vic- toria, there is yel another bus coming along for Gordon Camp- bell. This one will arrive as a result of monumental disarray among the recoinposed Liberals and Socreds in Victoria. Neither of them will attract the right kind of modern leader, and the same col- lection of clowns will be fighting over scraps in Victoria. Gordon Campbell — the unity candidate — will still be watching from the sidelines. Even then, he may not have to choose a political party. They will choose him. neither powerful personal friends, nor anyone who actively con- demns him. Press questions as to his lead- ership ambitions are rather ab- surd, He has yet to find a party he wants to join, let alone one he wants to lead. . The past few days have been amusing. During the first round of questioning, the mayor snapped that he had no interest; he is planning to run for re-election. But Gordon Wilson’s call for a full-blown leadership convention seemed to cause a change of heart; Campbell said he would have to consult his family. This suggests to me that prior to consulting his family, he has consulted someone else — (hullo there Pat Kinsella?) — who sug- gested that the pot must keep boiling; agitate intrigue; never say never. Free advertising should never be rejected: As messy as the Liberal party seems to be, there is a worthy prize for a leader. Rather than the plaintive cry from the wilderness, it is the official Oppesition with a taxpayer-financed budgct. A strong new leader would have an enviable position in forging a free enterprise coalition. A popular NDP government cannot beat a unified oppesition. An ucpopular NDP wonid be devastated. So Gordon Campbell’s only concern is one of timing. Gardon Wilson is not dead. If he fights for his job, it will bea scrutchy and bloody event. A-new leadet may not have much of an army. . ; if Gordon ‘Campbell misses this bus, the next one is coming right along, The Socreds have 10 times the membership and far more ex- perience.
