District of North Vancouver Fire Services hopes your family does know what to do, but our experience tells us most families are fairly complacent and feel fires are something that they read about in the newspapers or watch on television — that they happen to other people and won’t happen to them. Most families are also under the assumption that, even if a fire were to break out in their home, the fire department would come and put the fire out and everything would be OK. Unfortunately, they are dead wrong! First of all, fires can happen to anyone. at: any time. Fire will strike the rich, the poor, schools, - and businesses. It can even happen to royalty, as was proven last year in England when Windsor Castle burned. We must realize that fires can affect every one of us. We must prepare for a possible - fire in our home. The fire and smoke are too in- tense for Mom or Dad to help the children; family members must escape out of their second exit on their own. The bedroom doors should be closed and blankets’ stuffed around the cracks of the doors; this will provide a barrier which will give you extra time to escape. Be sure that the windows all open frecly, and that bedrooms on the second storey or higher are equipped with fire escape ladders. Everyone must assemble at a designated meeting place, e.g. a tree, lamp post, will eliminate any confusion about who is still in the house. Have a family member go to a neighbor’s home to call the fire department. People must realize that when a fire occurs, escape must be their . first thought.
