As a dramatic counterpart to dressing, makeup HOLIDAY WEAR for Christmas '92 should be complimented with polished makeup. Beauty tips for Hollywood glamor focus on smoky eyes, pencilled lips WOMEN ARE once again being influenced by beauty from the °40s, an era. of studied glamor when well- defined lips and soft, smoky eyes were inspired by im- ages from the silver screen. Two essential tools necessary to evoke the glamor borrowed from that era are eyeliner and lipliner pencils. Eyeliner pencils can be used alone to subtly emphasize the eyes or add the finishing touch to a smoky shade of eyeshadow. And although lipliner pencils go on with a liquid feel, they won't smudge easily. Cindy Stokes, cosmetivian at Shoppers Drug Mart, Capilano Mall, offers these techniques for mastering the application of cosmetic pencils to achieve knockout Hollywood glamor. The eyes have it @ Try the -dot-to-dot technique. Draw dots on the upper lid as close to the lashes as possible. Smudge the dots together with a cotton bud to make a soft line. ® To steady the hand when draw- ing a line, rest the elbow on a hard surface or cup it with the other hand. ® This is another technique: gent- iy pull the lid taut with the third finger, then carefully draw in a line (or.dots) close to the lashes. @ Discreetly-placed individual lashes after mascara application imparts a_ wide-eyed innocence while a fringe of frankly faux eyelashes helps create the smolder- ing look of a °40s movie star vamp. Dramatic lips @ Proper lip liner applications: Start at the centre of the top lip and draw a line out to one corner, then repeat from the middle to the other corner. Line the bottom lip in one go from corner to corner. @ Thin lips can be made to look fuller by dotting concealer along the lip line, then blending it carefully with a sponge. This makes the lip line less noticeabie so it’s possible to trace a new fuller shape. Draw just outside the natural lip line with a light natu- ral-colored pencil (try to find the same shade as your lips). Finally, fill in your lips with color, making sure the liner and lipstick are blended together. @ Narrow down full lips by using a pencil that’s slightly darker than your lipstick. Draw around your lips just inside your natural lip line, starting in the centre of the top lip, working out to each cor- ner and then from corner to cor- ner on your bottom lip. Brush on your lip color, blending right out to the edges of the liner. @ Go for a vivid red mouth to balance soft, smoky eyes. © For fade-proof color and a matte finish, filt in the whole lip with lip liner pencil. becomes equally important. Pretty party faces in '92 have a clear makeup base that is understated and porcelain fine, with the focus on bedroom eyes and bsiroom lips. This party season, you will need a face so alluring that he will never want to leave your side. Create a mysterious guise with darkened, exaggerated eyebrows, lined and smudged lids, heavily mascara-ed lashes, dramatic lips, and just a touch of color at the cheekbones. And since you don’t want your glamorous visage to give up the. minute the clock strikes midnight, take the following precautions. Apply foundation over the en- tire face including the lips. Line and color the lips entirely with pencil before lipstick, since pencil lasts even when you’ve sipped a drink. .
