Seniors’ needs report requested

AFTER BECOMING

aware of the need for

increased

seniors’ accommodation in North Vancouver, North Van-
couver City Council asked Monday for 2 report from its
social planning staff that will make recommendations for
the current and future needs of city seniors.

The motion to have the issue
studied was put forward by Ald.
Barbara Perrault last week after
council rejected a plan to build a
seniors’ rental project in the
200-block of East 23rd Street.

Ald. Rod Ciark said he was
shocked that the arguments for
supporting the motion were the
same as those he used last week
when he tried to get his fellow
councillors to support the East
23rd Street project.

He said the motion was a con-
venient way to ‘‘cover one’s polit-
ical derriere’’ after four members
of council rejected the seniors’
project.

Perrault, who objected to
Clark’s use of the word derriere,
later asked him for an apology,
but when Clark refused Mayor
Jack Loucks said he would not
pursue the matter further.

In speaking to this week’s mo-
tion, Perrault said seniors’ hous-
ing in the city needs to be exam-
ined because population trends
show an increasing percentage of
seniors in North Vancouver.

The requested report, she said,
was intended to get council think-
ing proactively rather than reac-
tively about the situation.

Perrault added that council
should know where seniors’ ac-
commodation should go when
making decisions regarding the ci-
ty’s design.

“The baby-boomers will soon
be seniors,’’ Perrault said, ‘‘and
we have to start planning now.”’
