MAIL! OX We need recyclable packaging Dear Editor: : One of your readers has taken me to task for being in favor of packaging. ‘‘Shame on the likes of Ald. Ernie Crist and his kind who think wasteful production is nec- essary, because industry can’t be trusted to wash their battles,” stated Tae Rim Yoon. Did I say this? Yes, ! did. I like packaging. Packaging protects, packaging is hygienic, packaging is civilized. The problem is not packaging per se, but too much and often the wrong kind. But, sitice your reader has asked for positive solu- tions, let me state them again. What is needed is government legislation compelling manufac- turers to: (a) produce packaging that is recyclable; and (b) re-use recyclable material in the produc- tion of new products and, by do- ing so, provide a guaranteed mar- ket for the recyclable material. As of this moment, neither is the case. The result is utter chaos. The taxpayer is being grandly hoodwinked. He is paving fo7 col- lection through the blue-box pro- gram believing that what he puts in there is being recycled when, in fact, most of it js being dumped for lack of markets. He is paying for the bureaucra- Thanks to community Dear Editor: We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the North Shore News and all the wonderful people in the cormmunity who helped make our grand opening such a success. And to top it off he is also paying for the glossy brochures telling everyone how wonderful everything works. As | have said, it’s a scam and it’s chaotic. And how would ap- propriate legislation solve it? For one thing it would not be neces- sary to re-use glass bottles and take unnecessary health risks. After being dropped into a con- tainer on the way to the super- market, the glass would be col- lected by the manufacturer and made into new products, to use an example. Instead of paying Tom Sawyer for painting his fence he would pay us. Now that is what I call solving a problem and saving tax- payers’ money at the same time. Ald.
