32 — Friday, August 16, 1991 - North Shore Naws place. The confusion surrounding the Stealth’s status illustrates that it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell the imports from the domestics. Many ‘‘domestic’’ automobiles aré actually re-badged imports, or foreign cars manufactured or assembled in North America. In addition, many are hybrids designed and built using the com- bined resources of two different automobile companies, commonly Sapanese and American ones. Here’s a few examples of cars that are built in Japan or South Korea and sold in Canada with a domestic nameplate: Dodge Colt, Eagle Summit, Dodge Stealth, Eagle 2000GTX (Mistsubishi/ Japan/Malaysia), Ford Festiva (Kia/South Korea), Chevrolet Sprint/Pontiac Firefly (Suzuki/ Japan), and Pontiac LeMans (formerly the Passport Optima, Daewoo/South Korea). Foreign production of domestic vehicles is not limited to the Far East, though. Many domestic cars are built in Mexico, where labor rates are considerably lower. GM, Ford and Chrysler all manufacture cars and light trucks in Mexico. Vehicles such as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer, Chrysler LeBaron, Dodge Shadow, Chevrolet Cavalier, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera, Ford F-Series trucks are all manufactured in Mexico (although all of these vehicles are also built in the Unit- ed States). The Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer are particularly interesting. Jointly designed by Ford and Mazda, the Escort/Tracer is built WV camp combines nature with art ARTS EXPRESS is back for its third season. During the weeks of Aug. 19 and 26, children can take part in the ultimate visual and performing arts experience. Set in Dundarave Park, the one-week camps com- bine nature with art education. Instructors Maggie Mason and Trudy Bufton will provide an in- tegrated approach to the arts, teaching drama and improvisation plus multi-media art. Children will use improvisation and character study to develop a mini-performance complete with props and costumes. They will explore drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and more. Children may register for morn- ing, afternoon or all-day sessions for one or two weeks. Participants must be at least eight years old. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to make distinction THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE Dodge Stealth sports car was scheduled to be the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 this year, until organizers realized that it was built in Japan. Somehow, it just didn’t seem right that a Japanese car should be leading the pack at America’s premier automobile race. Chrysler substituted a hastily-prepared and yet-to-be-produced 1992 Dodge Viper sports car in its Greg Wilson AUTOMOTION in the U.S. and Mexico and uses a (Japanese) Mazda 323 platform. Many of its parts however, in- cluding an optional engine, are made in Japan. To make matters even more confusing, some domestic imports are actually built in Canada and the United States. For example, some GMC Tracker 4X4s (other- wise known as Suzuki Sidekicks) are built at Suzuki’s CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. Other cars are “‘hybrids,’’ a result of a joint venture between two manufacturers. The Ford Probe, for example, is built right Get Your Honda In Shape For The Summer. The Eagle Talon/ Plymouth Laser is built alongside the Mitsubishi Eclipse in Normal, Iinois. Mercury’s new Villager mini-van will be based on the Nissan Quest. If you prefer an import car (with an import badge) to a domestic, you may be surprised to learn that many imports are built in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. For example, the best- selling car in the U.S. last year and the third best-selling car in Canada, the Honda Accord, is manufactured in Marysville, Ohio, as well as in Japan. Currently, more than half of all Accords sold in North America are built in the United States, and Honda is working to increase that number. Examples of imports built in the United States include the aforementioned Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Subaru Legacy, Nissan Sentra, and Toyota Corolla (Geo Prizm). As a general rule, Japa- nese cars that are made in eastern Canada are sold in Eastern Canada and the United States on- ly. Import cars in western Canada often come from Japan. Not surprisingly, many foreign and domestic automakers are tied together financially. For example, Ford owns a minority portion of Mazda, and Kia, a South Korean firm. Chrysler has a minority’ ownership in Mitsubishi, and General Motors has interests in Isuzu, Suzuki, and Daewoo.
