Open every day from 11 a.m. ING’S IS more than fair; for fish and chips it is first rate. The successor to La Belle Sole opened in the second- storey locale in early June with lit- tle fanfare, but its arrival was trumpeted by North Shore fish and chips fans whose snouts, ever snif- fing the breeze for the sweet aromas of cod and freshly sliced potatoes being deep fried, picked up the news well before Table Hopping staff did. “tt has arrived," they advised on the red emergency Table Hop- ping hotline, before hanging up mysteriously. “What has arrived?’ asked the food-befuddled Table Hopping minions. “King’s,” answered the chorus of the converted. ‘King’s Fare. In West Vancouver. The Best.” “The best what?” wondered the Table Hopping staff in har- mony. A subsequent investigation revealed that King’s Fare has been Operating cut of its original Mar- pole-area location for the past 10 years, delivering a brand of fish and chips that has converted even the most demanding of Deep Fryers. Some of the more committed from West Vancouver's en- thusiastic Deep Fryer belt have made regular pilgrimages to the original King’s Fare, a trip over the bridges that many Northenders would shudder at the thought of taking. So the arrival on the North Shove, and especially the arrival in West Vancouver, of the King himself was an event almost religious in its significance. And for anyone who enjoys an occasional indulgence in a juicy slab of ced or halibut served atop a stack of fresh french fries ac- companied by a schooner of chill- ed pilsner, King’s Fare is cause for applause. What was La Belle Sole is now Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING La Belle Cod, La Belle Halibut and more. The restaurant’s menu is basic British deep-try, offering combina- tions of chips with cod, halibut, oysters, prawns and scallops. Prices range from around $8 for a basic serving of Cod and Chips (two pieces of fish) up to around $14 for three pieces of cod with an extra load of chips. In between, the discerning Deep Fryer can sample such exotica as Scallops and Chips ($11.95) and Prawns and Chips ($12.95). Starters such as Onion Rings ($2.50) and Seafood Chowder ($1.95 for a cup; $2.95 for a bow!) are also available. All prices include GST. King’s Fare is licensed for wine, beer and liqueurs. { recommend, perhaps, a chilled Beck’s ($4.50) to start. Foliow with a Halibut and Chips ($11.95). The selection comes with two 4-paund chunks of sweet hal- ibut, deep-fried in a fine light bat- ter atop 2 bed of fresh french-fried potatoes. Coleslaw and an interesting tar- tar sauce are also provided. The fish is excellent: firm, fresh and sweet like chicken breast; the chips, heaped aboard, are fresh from King’s Fare’s farm in Delta and are similarly first rate. King’s Fare staff is young and turned out in white shirts and red ties. King’s Fare recently moved intna the West Van- couver locale formerly oc- cupied by La Belle Sole. NEWS photo Mike Wakefield The King has indeed arrived; Deep Fryers and other fish and chip fans rejoice. They are uniformly pleasant and attentive, yet to be soured by the long-distance strains placed upon body and soul by the restaurant trade. Service is swift. The restaurant offers three desserts ($3.50): Deep Apple Pie, Key Lime Pie and the ominous- sounding Blackout Torie. But the size of King’s Fare en- trees will sate the appetites of all but the most ardent guttler. - \\ e . e oo Dinner Burtet Special All you can eat, Chinese Seafood Hey!
