That was in the days when the Sun published a late edition. | got on the phone, called the office and told them, ‘I think you'd better stop everything fellas.” Dead bodies were splashed all over page one.” How did you manage to win the licence for CHAN? *‘I decided that television was just coming, and I’d always been interested in motion pictures... was producing 95 per cent of the TV commerciats in the area at the time. One thing led to another. When KVOS first went on the air they operated out of my place. Our production facil- ity became their facility... Then I got this crazy idea. I'd heard that broadcasting was going to open up. I wrote a brief — something like six inches thick. Some of the other applicants were : the Van- couver Sun, the Province, CKWX, CKNW — I must have been out of my mind. **} wrote a brief — something like six inches thick... Almost everything | did in preparing it was trying to second guess what might happen. I guessed pretty correctly. I was running our tourist association and promoting the city as not only a visitor des- Unation, but as a convention des- tination. I'd been fighting for years for a convention centre, which finally came to fruition when Expo came along. And | worked hard to get the convention and tourism business to finally be recognized as an industry."* How and why did you get involv- ed in the Variety Club? *‘! was involved in Variety when it was formed here 25 years ago...One thing led to another within a cou- ple of months I was on the board of directors. 1 got extremely in- volved with the Telethon..-About three or four weeks ago they ask- ed me to consider taking on the presidency. I tell you, when you see things at some of these children’s hospitals, children in very distressing states, it really touches you.’” & Go.
