YOUR Man Doug is in trouble again. This time it's another Jewish professor who thinks I am anti-Semitic. He has Jaid a complaint with the Press Council claiming I was all wrong when I wrote on Feb. 14 that because of Jewish pressure the media had ‘“‘in effect’’ agreed to ignore or otherwise play down the second Zundel trial. Here we go again. Ernst Zundcl, as you must know, was charged with “spreading false news"’ after distributing a pamphlet in which it was denied that there had been a Holocaust. The complaint was laid groups were appalled. But they should have thought of that earlier, No ane asked them to try to get Zundel, The complaints should never have been Jaid and Ontario should never have brought the man to trial under an Te Southam survey showed that the retrial testimony would be ‘played down by some and virtually ignored by aos others. by Sabina Citron of the Holocaust Remembrance Association, and Zunde! was sentenced to 15 mon- ths in jail. On appeal, a mistrial was declared. Jews clamored for another kick at the can, and a se- cond trial began on Jan. 18. What we have here is a clear at- tack on freedom of speech. But | do not intend to go into all that again today. It should be obvious to everyone. Prof. Werner Cohn, however, scems to have difficulty in understanding that simple fact. So do some other people. Because freedom of specch was under attack, | testified for the defence in the first trial, even though | had never. heard of Zundel before and ‘do uot care for his philosophy, he being an open admirer of Hitler. It quickly became apparent that Citron & Co. had made a strategic error. The media were attracted to ‘the trial like bears to honey, and gave it blanket coverage. Headlines like ‘*Gas chambers a -myth,’’ and ‘‘Gas was not used in prison camps, expert tells court,’’ popped up all the time. Jewish obscure law, Zunde} did a lot of crowing. ‘‘1 am an advertising man, he said. “What did those Jews expect?" Fearful that he would score again, Jewish leaders made the rounds of the Toronto media, A Southam News report by Ken McQueen that appeared in the Calgary Herald of Jan. 8 stated: “Leading members of the Jewish community have visited major Toronto news outlets to im- plore them to cover the (new) trial differently.”’ Alan Shefman of the League for Human Rights of B'nai B'rith was quoted as saying: , “This is an extraordinary story and may in fact merit very ¢x- traordinary coverage."’ He didn’t mean it should get wore coverage. The Southzm survey showed that (he retrial testimony would be “played down by some and vir- tually ignored by others." (Including Southam.) Some claim- ed this was because the story had “already been round once” weak argument, considering the importance of the event 10 the media. For who will be next on — i ARE YOU THINKING OF SELLING? Paul Palango, the Globe's city editor, told the CJN his newspaper had reviewed the way _ the story was covered before, and “there's a feeling we will be more sensitive.”’ It was stated in the McQueen report, meanwhile, that ‘in an unusual move," the Toronto Star had decided to play the story on the same inside page every day. It would take the permission of the managing editor to change that play. Canadian Press said it would not cover the trial on a regular basis. The CBC also opted for “minimalist” coverage. We move on to Feb, !4 and the appearance of my column. The trial judge had banned reporting for two weeks while a jury was being chosen and Segal arguments heard, but for the rest of the time there was almost no Jocal coverage. Nationally, there was also little. And there’s still litle. The Star runs its daily bits on the inside page and the Globe has tun a few small reports on pages 14 and 15, some of which don't appear in its Western edition. Cohn wrote to editors in Toron- to asking them whether it was Jewish pressure that caused them to back off. They all denied it.
