SENS PSC BLEUE TEEN WHAT MAY be one of the most significant donations’ to the Vancouver Archives came from the long-time North Vancouver McGuigan family. Bruce McGuigan said his grand- father had kept historical docu- ments concerning the city locked away in a family trunk for many years, and the material was passed down to his father. “We always knew about it, we just weren’t sure exactly how much was there. We never had an inven- tory done,”’ he said. “One of the photos found in the trunk shows the eldest . McGuigan on Grouse Mountain in front of a cabin, It was the second cabin to be built there.” Family friend Jeff Swartz volun- teered to sort through the docu- ments and complete an inventory. : Swartz described the records as a “coup” which will help document Vancouver’s early history. “The administrative records are _a very rich and important find,’’ he said. ‘‘it’s really an interesting study. I see it as a real pleasure to come and sift through the materi- al. It’s marvelous to read about the city’s character in the early 1900s.”” Swartz said one of the most im- — portant finds is the first Vancouver By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter city council bylaws, written in 1886. The McGuigan collection also contained the first contract for a street railway company in Van- couver and the first contract for street lights. There were also police records, and a substantial number of documents relating to McGuigan’s grandfather’ s plan to build a scenic railroad up Grouse Mountain. One of the photos found in the trunk shows the eldest McGuigan on Grouse Mountain in front of a cabin. It was the second cabin to be built there. Swartz said documents show that the Grouse Mountain Scenic Incline Railroad Company re- quired $750,000 in venture capital. The company had reached the stage where the grading of the railroad had commenced, but because of the lack of funding the project fell through. Swartz said there are records showing who bought shares on the railroad. The material relating to Van- couver’s early history was donated this year to the Vancouver ar- chives.
