The Jan. 3 world junior hockey (tournament game between Canada and the Soviet Union ended in a huge, bench-clearing brawl that saw both teams battling it out. For Canada, the subsequent disqualification meant the gold medal hopes were now firmly dashed. For the Soviets, the disqualification meant the end to the tournament where the team would place well down the international ranks. Ice hockey is a contact sport and fighting is thought to be part of the game — to play hard means to hit hard. But some are feeling the game is too violent, with emphasis being placed not on skill but on sheer physical force, This week, Inquiring Reporter wants to know if people think hockey is too vi- olent. Van man compensated AN AWARD to a North Van- cOuver man was among 140 an- nounced recently under the Crimi- nal Injury Compensation Act. The 24-year-old man, who was attacked and punched in the face by a male assailant while in a cabaret, was awarded $1,500 under the Criminal Injury Compensation Act, The man suffered a fractured nose and multiple contusions to his face, Under the Criminal {njury Compensation Act, anyone who is a victim of crime in B.C. may app- ly for and receive compensation, bring an action against a person or persons, or do both. Application forms are available at any office of the Workers’ Compensation Board which administers the act. The money to pay Criminal In- jury “‘ompensation comes from the consolidated revenue fund of British Columbia, through the Ministry of the Attorney General of B.C. When the victim decides not to bring an action then, upon pay- ment of compensation, the board is entitled to sue the party or par- ties responsible for the victim’s in- jury. The act gives the board authori- ty to pay compensation where there has been no criminal convic- tion or prosecution, although the claimant is obliged to report the incident to the police as soon as possible.
