] 4- Friday, February 15, 1985 - North Shore News strictly personal by Bob Hunter The bare facts give you Canada in the 1980s. On one coast we have Richard Hatfield being persecuted by the media over unproven allegations that he smok- ed pot and snorted coke in the privacy of his home and on the other we have the B.C. Teachers Federa- tion defending the Abbotsford educator who posed ir! her garter belt for a wanker mag, claiming she snouldn’t be suspended for public nudity. Okay, what are we to make of these utterly contradictory positions? First, 1 feel sorry for Hatfield. Whether he did what he did or he didn’t is beside the point. He was cleared in court of a pot- smuggling rap, and that should be the end of it. Yet the press has gone after his hide, quoting unnamed ‘‘ex- students’’, whatever the hell an ex-student is supposed to be, as saying they got stoned with him at his home. First of all, so what? If you're going to make a deal out of it, why not arrest the ex-students? Second, what bloody business is it of the press what Hatfield does at home anyway? When Maggie Trudeau was making a name for herself as a flower child, the papers were careful to avoid pointing out the ob- vious, namely that she was stoned out of her brain half the time she lived at 24 Sussex Drive. Hatfield, for some reason, has become the target of a media witch-hunt. At the rate things are going, by the time this column sees the light of print, he may have resigned, for all I know. | hope he doesn’t. Innocent until pro- ven guilty — isn’t that the way it’s supposed to work? Just because somebody's a politician shouldn't automatically make them a public whipping boy. On the other hand, in the case of the Abbotsford teacher and her snapshot- happy husband, we have a clear-cut case of guilt already established. If the question is, did she pose for what is known in the skin trade as a beaver shot, the answer is yes, The school board in ques- tion quite properly suspended her. Then, thinking about it, the board suspended her hus- band as well for taking the picture in the first place. Cor- rection: not for taking the picture, but for getting it published. Nobody argues for a minute that the couple didn’t have a perfect right to do whatever they wanted to do in the privacy of their bedroom. But submitting the photo to what is politely call- ed a ‘‘girlie’’ magazine in New York is a whole other order of business. Personally, 1 think any husband who wants to show his basically naked wife off to an audience of anonymous ‘onanists is a weirdo to begin with. In the old days, the woman herself would be referred to a a shut. It's that simple. Teachers are constantly trying to make the point that they are professionals. Okay, where does the teachers’ federation get off then trying to rationalize such unprofes- sional conduct as baring one’s ass in a skin mag? Secondly, Jet’s face it, if the rules of the private sector applied, most employees who undertook to uncover like that would find themselves out on the street in minutes. ! mean, if Ms. Beasley’s boobs are flaunted in pinups stuck up all over the office, who’s going to be able to concen- trate on their dictation? To pretend that the kids in the naked teacher’s room aren’t going to be affected in their perception of the authority figure (well, figure anyway) at the front of the class, is nonsense. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. I know perfectly well if any of my teachers had ever posed nude the picture would have appeared in every WV approves vision of schools’ SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT Ed Carlin’s ‘‘vi- sion of the future’ in West Vancouver schools took another step forward Monday night as the board approved recommendations concerning Plan 45, Core French, Vision 2002 and Elementary French Immersion. “What the board did here tonight was certainly a major step in the right direction,”’ a as mersion at French Breads Lid, REAL French Breads anc croissants baked ine Authentic French Way No additives or preservatives Oniy the Best of natural ingredients used. “Quality is our commitment” with min. purchase of $3.00 505, :5th Street, West Vancouver 925-2880 said an enthusiastic Carlin.
