Mudry earns national bronze CONFUSION AND a protest muddled the final results in the men’s 10-mile scratch race which saw . defending -cycling champion Brent Mudry awarded the bronze after an initial sterling finish. The North Vancouver athlete was disappointed at the ruling, but is living with the judges’ decison. The confusion was caused because Mudry had lapped the field in the middle of the Canadian championship event. ‘The 48-lap race was one of three events Mudry entered last weekend. He also eared a bronze medal in the team pursuit and finished fourth in the four kilometre pursuit. Mudry’s strong so per- formance at the nationals played a strong part in his selection as reserve rider for the Canadian pursuit team at the world championships slated for Leicester, England in two weeks. There is also a_ strong possibility he will attend the Brisbane Commonwealth Games as well. Several other North Shore riders also raced at the Canadian championships. Veteran Joe Hailey of West Vancouver’ was awarded the gold for the sprint and the silver for the five-mile scratch. Hailey also placed fif- teenth in the 80 km road race. ~ Deep Cove’s Mary Hansen placed seventeenth in the 68 km road race. Mudry, Hailey and Hansen will be racing in tomorrow’s Molson Gastown Grad Prix, along with hundreds of other cyclists. The tenth annual running of the event begins at 2:15 p-m. in front of the Old Spaghetti. Factory on Water Street. Five other races will precede the Grand Prix beginning at 10:45 a.m. A special “penny farthing” race with riders in old time costumes begins at 1:40 p.m. to commemorate the Canadian Cycling Association birthday celebrations. Last year- more than 10,000 spectators lined downtown streets to watch the 65-lap race. KICKING UP a dust storm Wednesday night was West Vancouver Gary's Trolls defender Patty Dixon (centre) in quarter-final against Wesburne Football Club in Greater Vancouver Women's Soccer Association play.
