But the contravention is largely ignored locally.for reasons of practicality. And Alderman Bill Sorenson, leading the campaign for the ruling to be changed, maintained about 10 percent of the City’s population lives in such illegal suites. Sorenson told council it was being irresponsible if it didn’t face the issue. How the question will be presented to homeowners has not yet been decided. But it will not be as a referendum. A strong “yes” in favor of revenue suites will give council the impetus to ask the provincial government to change the law on the matter. And a “no” to the idea “might settle the issue once and for all”, Alderman Ralph Hall said, who does not think single family homeowners would support the idea of revenue suites. Hall lamented the changes that would be required to the Official Community Plan “which took almost nine years to develop”, if revenue suites were instituted.
