ay March 12, 1980 - North Shore News Canadian indoor tennis title now underway Competition started today (Wednesday) in the preliminary rounds of the Penn Canadian National Men’s Indoor’ Tennis Championship held at the Lions Gate Racquets club in North Vancouver. The championships, which will include the top B.C. players and top competitors from outside the province has been described by Davis Cup captain Jossef Brabenec Sr. as “definitely the biggest tournament in Canada.” Prize money this year has been doubled from last year to provide a total of $8,000, with the winner of the singles event picking up $1,800. Games will be played all this week, beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and starting at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Semi-finals will be played on Saturday at noon, with the singles final scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and the doubles final at 3 p.m. Among those _ players competing will be the Lions Gate professional, Ian Brady, who was ranked number one in B.C. last. year, in both men's singles and doubles. Brady started 1980 with double victories in Singles and Doubles in both the Western Indoor Open ~the Court Tournament and the B.C. Indoor Classic.
