The Canadian Com- mission for International Year of the Child is pleased to honour its youth by funding a second group of special projects across Canada. Festivals and celebrations programs of advocacy for children’s rights and cultural activities such as “Radio for Kids” will span the country. The projects were selected for their merit and relevance to children, as well as on the basis of population distribution and the number of applications received from each province. anada celebrate: f the child A strong multicultural emphasis and projects Servicing children with ‘special needs such as the blind. the autistic, the retarded and Neo-Canadian youth also captured _ the imagination of the funding comrnittee. Nearly 30 per cent of the projects receiving funds aim at recreational activities for children while educational activities represent about 20 per cent. Children’s par- ticipation in the. projects as well as the opportunity for a learning experience form an essential component of nearly all the programs. Of 850 = applications received for this group of projects, 187 grants totalling $396,400 were approved. More than 3000 applications were received by the Commission prior to the last at deadline of April .30; decisions on this group "of grants will be announced later. From the North Shore, North Shore Neighborhood House received $2500 for ‘Dancing from Around the World’—a programme of ethnic dancing for children, tapping the multicultural elements of this neigh- bourhood both for the teaching as well as the performing of ethnic dances.
