The basic idea of front-
wheel drive (fwd) was to find
a replacement for horses
which, of course, pulled a
wagon. Patent records show
that designs were registered
before the turn of the
century—one man applied
for a patent for a_three-
cylinder fwd car in 1879, but
the car was not built until
1907.

The man was G.S. Seldon,
and his car featured a
steering system whereby the
entire front axle pivoted
along with the engine!

A more serious attemp at
fwd was made in 1902, when
J.W. Christie built his first
fwd racing car. It was
followed by a more powerful
