new look, use the decorative
power of sheets.

Today’s patterns range from
romantic florats to bold
geometrics in virtually every color.

You'll find most sheets
classified as muslin or percale.

Sheets with a thread count (the
number of threads woven per
square inch) of 130 or fess are
muslin; those with a thread count

“of more than 130 are percale.

Muslins are typically a blend of
uncombed cotton and polyester.
Good grades of muslin have 128
to 130 threads per square inch;
those with fewer may go limp

-. after washing and are likely to

+ Percales, made of all-cotton or
polyester/cotton blends, have
thread counts from 130 to 250.
(Combed cotton has been pro-
cessed to remove the coarser cot-
ton fibers.}

Percale sheets that are made of
cotton/polyester blends wear
Tonger, cost less and dry faster
than their all-cotton counterparts.

Some blends are 50% cotton;
some use up to 60% or 65% cot-
ton. The higher the cotton con-
tent, the softer the fabric is.

To iop off your sheets, you
have several options,

Bedspreads typically come in
two lengths — one hangs down tc
the top of the box spring (and
should be used with a dust ruffle);
the other reaches the floor.

Comforters, a popular alter-

‘native to the bedspread, are filled
with down, a mixture of down
and feathers, or synthetic fiberfill.

. A comforter filled with natural
materials will keep you warm-in
the winter and cornfortable in the
warmer monihs, but it should be
professionally cleaned.

A polyester-filled comforter is
best for the summer months and is
washable according to the manu-
facturer’s instructions:

Designed to be used with a dust
ruffle, a comforter should be 18
inches wider than the bed.

Long used in Europe, duvets are
now widely available in this coun-
try. ;

A duvet is a comforter encased
in a removable cover, rather like a
large pillowcase. v

A duvet is intended to do the
job of top sheet, blanket and
bedspread all in one. Often,
however, it’s simply used in place
of a comforter.

Your bed frame choices are as
diverse as your bedding.

Styles range from the most sim-

- ple metal model to the most elab-
orate canopy.

To use simply a headboard,
you'll need a standard metal bed
frame, available from most mat-
tress manufacturers. These frames
are made with brackets that will
support a headboard.

If you plan to also use a foot-
board, you'll need to buy frame
extenders.

Other options include frame sets
with integral head- and foot-
boards, or versions with side run-
ners that connect the head and
foot. |

A move claborate option is the
four-poster, “with or without a
canopy treatment.

Because a four-pester creates

‘such dramatic visual impact, be
sure your room can accommodate
it. A frame that is bulky or made

of dark wood can easily over-:

power a sma!l] bedroom.

On the other hand, a four-
poster can make a low ceiling
seem higher and provide architec-
_tural interest.

Headboards . and four-posters
come in a variety of styles and
materials.

Rattan, wicker, oak and pine
are good choices for an informal
bedroom. More traditional models
are those made of fine woods such
as mahogany, walnut and cherry.

Brass beds are anuther all-time
favorite. Many made today mimic
turn-of-the-century styles, but
you'll also find contemporary
designs with straight lines and
simple finials.

In fact, metal is a popular ma-
terial for many contemporary
styles. In addition to brass, there
are models made of chrome and
steel — with finishes that range
from shiny to weathered to painted.

Before buying either a bed or
bedding, keep in mind that sheets
will most likely be the least ex-
pensive of the two. Therefore, it’s
wise to choose your headboard ox‘
four-poster first to establish your
room's decor.
