Visiting lummaries put Vancouver on the map

IT WAS a whirlwind
weekend for visiting veteran
cartoon animator Joe
Barbera, co-founder with
Bili Hanna of the famous
Hollywood Hanna-Barbera
Studios.

Joe was in town as a guest of
Cartoon Corner art galleries on
Granville island and Robson
Street, and was picked up at the
airport by two glamor girls, Gale
fioney and Heather Wiebe, ina
1936 Buick limousine.

Following a quick media tour,
Joe, thy creator of the Flintstones,
the Jetsons, Yogi and Boo Boo

‘and Tom and Jerry, was a special
guest at a giant barbecue at the
Granville Island location where
hundreds of fans had turned out
to meet him.

He signed his artwork and told
fascinating tales of how his
characters came to life.

' _.. Saturday morning, a huge
crowd of devotees blocked the
sidewalk at Cartoon Corner on
Robson to watch Joe leave his
handprints in cement while Zena
Wagstaff and her string quartet
played. .

of his animation cels, which fet-
ched as much as 33,000. Cartoon
buffs were also surprised to see
“The Great One,"' No. 99
himself, Wayae Gretzky and his
wife, Janet, purchasing a cel.

They had it autographed to
Paulina, their litde daughter.

Janet wrote a personal cheque
with their return address on it.

Seems that during the recent
Dragon Boat Festival, West Van
realtor Brent Eilers, a partner in
ReMax Masters Realty, was ina
panic to try and sell the most
Dragon Boat raffle tickets to en-
sure that their ReMax dragon boat
team would win the free entry in
next year’s races.

After much arm-twisting, Brent
was able to convince fellow realtor
David Andrews, of the Oakridge
ReMax office, to purchase 10
tickets.

David gave one of his tickets to
his father-in-law, Dr. Beb Mar-
rison, Turns out that Dr. Mor-
rison was the lucky winner of the
$68,000 Lexus 400.

If David wasn’t in the good
doctor’s good books before, he
surely must be now! ...

A couple of weeks ago, former
West Vancouverite and telethon
regular Pat Wasserman was raar-
ried to hotelier Bernard Levando
in Paris.

Pat is the widow of the late
Vancouver Sun columnist Jack
Wasserman.

On that very same day,
members and associates of the
renowned Belvedere Club cele-
brated Pat’s nuptials in North
Vancouver.

They did it by drumming Pat
out of their exclusive group?
