announced by the provincial
government.

“Women’s centres play a
critical role in their commu-
nities,” said =Women’s
Equality Minister Sue
Hamell, while announcing
the funding. “This 2%
increase (in funding) sup-
ports the important work
already being done by staff
and volunteers across the
province.

Sage is run by the North
Shore Crisis Services Society.

Englishman Ian Berry was

a young man in 1953 when
he began to visit Vancouver
regularly during his stint in
the Merchant Navy. Two of
the young Canadians he
remembers spending time
with were a couple known as
“Beans” and “Susie,” who
lived in a “modern crescent-
shaped house” in a wooded
area of West Van. He remem-
bers Beans as working for a
solicitor and Susie as a
teacher.

He first met them when
he invited them aboard the
ship Loch Avon, and now he
and his wife Anne would like
to visit them again on an
upcoming visit to Vancouver.
