Bob Mackin News Reporter WHILE “working” for the drummer of the decade’s biggest hard rock band, DDT singer Cory Perry- White taught the grandchildren of a rock and rol! Hall of Famer how to play street hockey in Los : Whar a life. But it didn’t come easy. In fact, it took seven years for DDT to get a major ~ label record deal and time in a top-quality studio. Perry-White shares vocals with Brian Howes in the - Vancouver quintet which just released its first album, Urban Observer, on TMC. The Flektra- distributed label is‘co-owned by Metallica A Rab KAS LR EE, Saenger cle oa etn 99? drummer Ears Ulrich and Tim Dutty, Mecallica’s tour accountant. Dutt) and Ulrich saw DDT play separately in Vancouver late last year berore making DDT an offer it couldn't refuse. “At the same time we were dealing with a few other labels trom the States,” Perry-White said. “This seemed to be the best way to go. We can actually be part of the label instead ofa speck in a big huge pool of records. We had more identity this way. We thought it would be better for us.” Perry-White said it’s not surprising a Metallica-clone isn’t the first band Ulrich signed to TMC. “Oasis is his favourite band, he’s also a big jazz fan and fikes a lot of old punk. He’s got diverse music tastes and is a very smart guy. | actually didn’t expect that.” DDT sounds little like Oasis or Metallica. The clos- est comparison may be to the Red Hot Chili Peppers dad's _ day to celebrate June 20 or Fishbone because of DDT's often frenetic mix of ska, punk and funk. Howes and drummer Bobby James formed the band in 1992 with guitarist Mike MacKay. Perry-White joined in 1994, the same vear his vig as a promotions rep and dise jockey at COAST 1040 Radio ended. The AM modern rock sta- tion changed ownership and format. Ifanvthing, it gave White more imcentive to help make the band work. The following year, the group released a seven-song EP called LOTGOOP (Li iving * Off The Generosity OF Other People). It took them on tour through North America, Sweden and Germany. Locally, they played the third stage when Lolfapalooza made its final visit to Thunderbird Stadium. The biggest advantage of the deal with Ulrich’s TMC is wide distribution through- out North America. White recalls touring to promote LOTGOOP and “going to a city and wishing and hoping our record would be in the store, and if it wasn’t, then dropping i it off yourself. During sessions at L.A.’ ’s Sunset Sound, DDT was : sandwiched between rooms where Sugar Ray and the Wallflowers were working on new discs. “Those guys played bas- ketball every day.
