ALMOST a dozen new or
redesigned family sedans and
an equal number of new lux-
ury cars will find their way
into dealerships this winter
and spring.

Vehicle price increases are expect:
cd to be minimal or non-existent.
According to manufacturers’ repre:
sentatives and industry analysts,
Canadian consumers are just nor will
ing te pay any more than they did fast
year.

Two new automobile manuiactur-
ers, Daewoo and KIA of South
Korea. will begin: selling cars in
Canada in 1999) Daewoo ts offering
the subcompact Lanos hatchback and
sedan, the compact) Nubira sedan,
and the mid-sized Leganza sedan.

Kia has the Sephia compact sedan
and the compact Sportage sport util-
ity.

However, you may not be able to
buy them here until next fall or win-
ter, Sales will begin in Oniarie and
Quebee in 1999, and spread across
the country over the next year.

A new Volkswagen Golf and
Jetta will arrive this winter, marking

Golf is still. a hatchback, but is longer,
wider and reomier than the current
Golf. It retains refined versions of its
2.0-hitre four-evlinder engine and

miniature Passat, is also bigger,

roomier and rounder, and is expected
to include more safety equipment. It
will also arrive this winter.

A new Mazda Protege is already
on sale. This Japanese-built compact
sedan is available with ovo new four
cylinder engines with slightly more
power and refinement, and a new
four-speed automatic transmissi

It has larger 14-inch ti
track, and is now available in  chree
trim level: DX, SE and LX. Prices
stare at $14,870.

General Motors has two new
compact cars this year: the Pontiac
Grand An and the Oldsmobile
Alero, both avaiiaMle in coupe and
sedan bodystyics.

The Grand Am was introduced
earlier chis vear, and has a wider
stance, a roomier interior, and a new,
more powerful 3.4-litre V6 engine on
uplevel models. Prices start at
$21,795.

The Oldsmobile Alero replaces the
Achieva, but is sportier and has 4

standard automatic transmission,
independent suspension and dise
brakes with ABS. Four cylinder
Alero’s start ar £20,995.

An all-new Hyundai Sonata
moves slightly upscale this year, its
first redesign since 1993.

The Sonata is significantly roomier
because the body is 5 em wider. Base
models have a new 2.4-litre four-
cylinder engine while uplevel GLS
models have a new 2.5-litre V6

and adaptive automatic trans-
mission. Side airbags are a new
option. Prices start at $19,495.

A new Subaru Legacy is coming
next year as a 2000 model, bur not
much is known about it yet.

In the meantime, Subaru has
added an Outback version of the
Legacy sedan co complement the
popular Ourback Wagon. Legacy’s
start at $20,495 and go as high as
$35,000.
