Life in a northern Canadian mining commu-
nity 50 vears ago is the subject of
Presentation House Gallery’s latest exhibit
Kennedy Bradshaw's Yukon Friends.
Bradshaw (1900-1981) was a recent
British immigrant, employed by United Keno
Hill Mines, when he documented his life for

the folks back home with a 35mm Leica cam-
era. “Ir is unlikely chat Bradshaw considered
himself an artist; however, his photographs
transcend the snapshot genre and evoke more
than a casual interest from the viewer,” notes
curator Robin Armour, “Something more
than here wwe are.”

Most of the photographs un display are
from a defined period of time (circa 1950)
although Bradshaw worked for the company
until 1975, retiring as an electrician second-

class, Some of his work was lost in a fire while

what remains is part of the Keno City Mining
Museum’s collection, At one tme more than
20,000 people lived in the area (200 miles
from the Arctic Circle) — today there are less
than 50.
