Saturn's sporty coupes
receive the first major over-
haut since their introduction
in 1990. Soth the base SC1
and more powerful C2 mod-
els are now built on the
Saturn sedan platform, which
extends the wheelbase by
more than 80 mm when com-
pared to the "96 coupe. The
resuki? A much more livable
inte'os, especially for those
ridivig in the rear seat. The
new coupe design also sesults
in more front and rear head-
room as well as increased leg
reom. From the outside, the
coupe looks markedly differ-
ent from its predecessor, and
how sports expased head-
lights, an open-mouth front
air scoop containing fog
lights, and a rear deck spoiler
(optional on the SCi, stan-
dard on the SC2). Other
changes to the coupe include

a redesigned interior, the
addition cf sound-absorping
material between the door
panel and door frame,
improved engine mounts that
reduce noise and vibration,
relocaiion of the seat belts to
make for easier entry to the
rear seat, and a low-fuel indi-
cator lamp c:: the dash. As
weil, the optional 15-inch cast
aluminum wheels are all-new
for 1997. Both coupe models
continue to share powerplants
with the sedan and wagon
series. The SC1's engine is
the 1.9-litre SOHC four-cylin-
der that delivers 100 horse-
power. Moving up to the SC2
buys you the 124 horsepower
DOHC version of the 1.9, plus
standard amenities such as
power steering, 15-inch tires,
leather-wrapped steering
wheel and premium cloth

seats.
