8 - Friday, February 28, 1992 —- North Shore News Dear Editor: About the only thing Noel got tight in his Feb. 23 column “When will the Jackboots see suite reason?’’ was that | voted against the extension of the regis- tration and closing down program for all secondary suites in the District of North Vancouver. I am absolutely on opposite sides of the issue with two other aldermen who advocate the wholesale closure of all but 297 registered secondary suites (those 297 to be phased out by 1993 and 1995). MAILBOX No policy better than suite policy I support the retention of sec- ondary suites by a return to the pre-1986 state of affairs. Strategically, by opposing the extension of the existing policy (which would have us embark on a jackboot program of closing down the thousands of suites which past experience show us will unlikely be registered), I hope eventually to convince council to retire this registration and phase out policy altogether. Sometimes no policy is better than a policy which creates more problems than it sets out to solve. By returning suites to their pre-1°8G ‘‘illegal’’ status, district inspectors can act on written complaints by those who are di- rectly affected by nuisance suites (approx. 50 complaints are receiv- ed per year). My long-term view of those 3,000 to 4,000 suites that are unregistered and that are in- «tegrated with their neighborhoods (and which provide mortgage help for young families, revenue for empty nesters, as well as rental accommodation for students, singles, couples, lone parent fami- Thanks for creek spill coverage Dear Editor: Congratulations on your Feb. 7 front page picture, with its headline, ‘‘Soap fouls NV creek.” Your photo of Fred Legebokow perfectly illustrated the indignant tone of your story; namely, that some irresponsible citizen has, by allowing detergent to flow into a storm sewer, endangered a whole generation of coho salmon from Mackay Creek. It is ironic that your coverage should appear at the end of a week in which Canadians were in- formed that the ozone layer over our country is seriously depleted, so much so that the next year the federal government will regularly alert us about the dangers of con- tracting skin cancer. Both the creek spill and the ozone depletion: have resulted from human ignorance and/or ir- responsibility. A further example of your con- cern was the publication of three letters defending the maintenance of the Maplewood Flats as an un- threatened, undeveloped part of our North Shore heritage. | was born 71 years ago in North Lons- dale and have witnessed a decline in the health of our community, both social and environmental. | believe there is a connection be- tween the iwo. Thank you for your commit- ment to a carefully controlled en- vironment that will lead to physi- cal, spiritual and economic good health. | am sure that the hun- dreds of children ! have guided on tours at Maplewood Flats will be your debtors. Harvey Burt North Vancouver Don’t glorify pollution Dear Editor: Don't glorify vandalism by putting it on page one of the news (‘Soap fouls NV creeck,”’ Feb. 7). These stunts are done for the media. Those who did it are sitting in front of their video " games laughing and phoning their friends to tell them that they did it. There is a lot of good in the North Shore News, why put the junk on the front page? F.B. Jameson Wes!
