New-look NVC library
to host grand opening

THE NORTH Vancouver City
Library will show off its new face
to the public at its Saturday, Sept.
7 grand opening.

The festivities kick off at 2 p.m.
with a cake-cutting ceremony, a
book and a book bag draw plus
entertainment, including the
Capilano Chorus barbershop
quartet and buskers Birds of a
Feather.

The library remained open
throughout the $650,000-
renovation project, which began
Feb. 18.

Changes include the addition of
an elevator, which will be helpful
in transporting the handicapped, a
new tape books room, and general
improvements in the use of space.

“Really, what the renovations
amount to is a much better use of
what we already had,’’ said
library spokeswoman Joyce
Moller, who heads the children’s
section.

“There is now handicap-
accessible washrooms and water
fountains for kids. The look is
quite different — they’ve opened
up the walls and made a dif-
ference in the ability of a large
number of people to work in a
small space.’’

She pointed out, however, that

there are still more renovations to
be donc.

As well, Moller said the library
is on the “edge of the diving
board”’ of installing a new com-
puter system. Project leader
Wai-Lin Chee said the system will
speed up processing, keep better
track of books and give the public
better access to reading material.

She expects the computer
system to be circulating by
Christmas or the new year; the
public should have access to the
system shortly after the new year.

The new system will be com-
patible with North Vancouver
District’s computer system and the
Vancouver Public Library’s.
