MAILBOX News accused of exaggeration Bear Editor: 1 gasped as | read the headline NVD accused in a recent issue of the North Shore News and then read my name as the sole ‘‘accuser’’ about the Northlands golf course. My concern was not that the reporter had inten- tionally tried to exaggerate, because he accurately in- terpreted the frustrated and even exasperated tone in my voice, but rather that the selection of the words — ‘accused’? was a condemning term I did not use and one that would only increase the conflict sur- rounding the issue being discussed. There is a big difference between saying: 1. ‘*We respectfully submit a formal complaint’* (the wording of the Deep Cove Community Associa- tion letter that went to council) or even to say ‘‘! feel frustrated that you haven't provided us with ade- quate information on such an important issue,”’ 2. "bE accuse NVD Council of shorichanging the public.” The first, conveys the factual information about the complaint, and even uses a frank expression of feelings, but the second conveys an attitude that would likely result in a ‘‘dig in your heels’’ attitude, reducing the likelihood of resolution. Our common goal is to work together cooperatively so it is in our mutual interest to avoid language that obscures that goal. } passionately believe that council should have provided information about the Northlands golf course before the public hearing. Trying to decide whether we want the golf course in Northlands without knowing about the environmental impact is like being asked to decide whether we want to undergo surgery before knowing how we'll feel when it's over. It can be weeks of heartache, Pressure, scraping. I am a single mother: we all have some tragic script that leads lo our circumstances. I collect GAINS Handicap Pension. I’m exhausted this year. I have only been pulling together as much Christmas as I can for seven years now, for my one lovely daughter. I can’t imagine the toil some dear mothers go through with three or four children. My daughter and I try to give as much kindness as we can, and anything we can spare. My daughter would break your heart with her kindness. She has a friend who is one of three girls of a single mom. Two weeks ago my daughter insisted her friend keep one of her two dolls. Later at bedtime, she told me she thought it was very important for this girl to have a doll of her own. My message here is, please folks, remember the food boxes, and the Salvation Army, and the churches, and the joy collection, remember anywhere you can help, even with a smile to that mom in the mall trying to cope with babes that have heard ‘‘no,"’ a million times. Open your arms and remember Christmas. Love your neighbor.
