Canada cannot remain a union ‘peacefully forever’ Dear Editor: The largest country in the world is undergoing a historical change and a possible break up that many in the West regard as both in- evitable and desirable. How can a country so vast, and filled with people of such diverse religions, languages, and cultures, reinain a union when it is gov- ermed by a strong centralist gov- ernment representing a majority group from among the myriad. The answer, of course, is that it cannot remain a union peacefully forever, and many of us in the West look forward to the day when the so called ‘“‘republics’’ regain their independence from a system that was forced upon them, either by armed force or economic coercion. The second largest country in the world is also undergoing a his- torical change, and a_ possible break up, for many of the same reasons. The recent, long, drawn-out search for a ‘‘Canadian identity” has produced an expected blank, because there has been no such animal since the Pearson (and Trudeau) post-colonial, an- ti-British era. ‘‘Canadians’’ today serve under a Liberal Party flag (the red and white rag) and an- swer to the dictates of Fran- cophone Quebec. Tne outcome of this breakup can be only for the good of the people of British Columbia, no matter what the various pro- paganda departments of the fed- eral government may say. Certain- ly the federal government has a vested interest in our real estate and our impotent voters. B.C. should become a sovereign state, within the Commonwealth. We have a unifying language; we have the population; we have a modern history very different from that of other parts of Canada (both Upper and Lower); we have a heraldic flag that has not been defiled by politics; we have a ‘‘pioneering’’ population, and we have a very ‘British Col- umbian”’ identity. Like the Baltic States, we shall be free one day. Chester Spink North Vancouver Flag in rags a sorry sight Dear Editor: While walking past Cleveland Elementary School I couldn’t help noticing the Canadian flag. Rather, the remains of the Cana- dian flag, flying from the flag pole. I have noticed that it has been in a ragged and neglected condi- tion for at least a month now. MP Cook should be aware of policy Dear Editor: Re: Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc. (VPSI) Closure: Further to the lead story in the May 8 North Shore News re the layoffs at Versatile, ¥ find it odd that MP Mr. Chuck Cook would comment, considering how silent he was over the Polar 8 fiasco, but as usual he was pessimistic. Approximately one week ago, Mr. Peter Quinn, CEO of VPSI, made the announcement that, in future, VPSI Vancouver would be strictly a repair yard and all new construction would be done in VPSI Victoria, and yet this week they close North Vancouver and send a cruise ship to Victoria for repair. Is it any wonder that the com- pany is in a mess when the CEO doesn’t know what is happening? Bigotry aside, there is a lot of truth in the comments your reporter attributes to Mr. Ernie Crist. The federal government has made itself very plain on ra- tionalization and I am net sur- prised that Mr. Cook is not aware of this policy of his party, con- sidering his record, in the past, on behalf of his ship-building con- stituents. Ron Ferguson President, Metal Trades Council Le PARTICIPALTION ) * Will a new one replace it soon? It is a shame to see such a lack of pride in this symbol of our country. Especially in front of an educational institution which, hopefully, teaches our children to be proud of their country. Flag poles have been designed in a way that the flag can be taken down at the end of each : Musi be Wi active: fi 688-0328 Mon. - Sat. 9-5 ling to have-an | summer~ Call John Casablancas and ask - " about our’special’ summer : day. Why not take advantage of this design by appointing a dif- ferent child every day to lower the flag? it would be a nice way to teach patriotism and would surely add a longer life to the flag!
