MAILBOx Housing is a social responsibility Dear Editor: No, it is not true that the hous- ing problem could be solved if, as Doug Collins says, the free market forces would be left on their own. To say that free enterprise could solve the housing problem if there were no interference is merely wishful thinking and only conven- tional economists and graduates of second class institutions of Icarn- ing still adhere to that concept. Yes, land prices are higher in large cities than in rural areas because of increased demand. But what accentuates the problem is Canada’s liberal policies which enable foreign speculators to buy land. In a modern society, housing has become a social responsibility as are health, educaiion and public transportation. If this is ignored and not acted upon it can only lead to mass suffering for growing numbers of people, along with Councils responsible for housing shortage Dear Editor: An adequate supply of rental accommodation is a necessity in every municipality and it is the re- sponsibility of the municipal coun- cil to reduce the present shortage crisis. Areas are zoned for apartments and a development permit is re- quired for approval to build. Up to recent years the ratio between Strata title condominiums and rental apartments was kept to about a 50/50 balance under the development permit control system. Lately all new apartment blocks have been approved as strata title and few, if any, specified as rental. It is to be hoped that ihe Mary: ‘cut the slobbery stuff’ OPEN LETTER TO MARY _COLLINS On Feb. 27, I was invited by a friend to spend $10 to have breakfast with Michael Wilson at the Hotel Vancouver. 1 didn’t real- ize you would be there too. This was the first opportunity I had to hear you in person. I can- not tell you how disappointed I was. If you're going to represent women, then at least act profes- sional and business-like. Cut the gushy, slobbery stuff. it’s been out of fashion for a long time. Further, John Crosbie’s insult of Sheila Copps required you, as Minister of the Status of Women, to voice an objection. His comments directed toward Sheila Copps are really indicative of his attitude towards all women. Here was a perfect opportunity for you to put him in his place. And did you? Of course not. Why not? 1 am extremely fearful of your approach to your new position in cabinet. I am even more frightened for Canadian women. It may take you only a few short months to erase the few positive steps made by Canadian women over the last 100 years.
