POLLUTION COMMITMENT Land-based sewage systems must become a government priority Dear Editor: It was encovraging to hear that the provincial government is bring- ing in amendments to the Litter Act and the Waste Management .Act which include protection of the marine environment. If these amendments are actually . enforced, we:can perhaps hope for some improvement in the condi- tion of our environment. While most areas of the province are attempting to. improve their’. environmental track record, “Bowen Islanders are faced with the disheartening news that construc- - tion of a primary treatment — other. words ‘no treatment’ ocean outfall from Snug Cove is due to start shortly. - The cost of this project will be paid for by a provincial govern- ment grant. Secondary treatment would have cost anywhere from $50,000 to $500,000. We are also being faced with pressure to have a three-lane ferry marshalling and parking project through Crippen Park. This pro- ject will cost in the region of $500,000, and word has it that the highways ministry is willing to come up with funding. Many wonder why our elected officials have spent so much energy in successfully lobbying one government ministry to fund a ‘blacktopping project which is not essential. Yet those same peopie have never put pressure on any government agency to fund an en- vironmentally-sound: sewage _ system. ‘At the same time, our federal MP, Mary Collins, has magically been able to produce $1! million dollars of taxpayers’ money for a private developer to dredge out environmentally-sensitive tidal flats. This is the same Mary Col- lins who so movingly stated in her campaign literature that “‘steward- ship of our precious environment” was one of the priorities of her | government. If any level of government seriously wishes to protect our marine environment, the produc- tion and installation of safe land- based sewage systems must become a priority. One of the first steps that could be taken to promote marine protection would be the banning of primary treatment ccean outfails along the coast of B.C. Surely it is time that we re- taught that each individual is responsible for his own actions and re-actions — no one else. Engage in promiscuity and suffer the results. If a school board takes on this, the student’s responsibility, it will surely be held accountable for the results nine months or years down the road, (the courts arriving at some insane decisions these days), when students claim the condoms were faulty and a pregnancy, VD or AIDS has resulted. Can you imagine the spiralling of our taxes in such cases? Let’s tell our young that PERSONAL BANERUPTCY ...
