Support group helps caregivers

MANY ADULTS are experiencing stress because they
are caught between the responsibilities of caring for
aging parents and the demarids of their career and
immediate families — their spouse, their children and,
in some cases, their grandchildren.

The North Shore Caregivers Support Group,
operating on a grant from New Horizons federal gov-
ernment program for seniors, recently started 2 sup-
port group for people caring for an aged mother or
father.

“Our support group is designed te help grown
children deal with the stresses of caregiving,’’ said
Phyllis Howard, the group’s counsellor coordinator.

The support group provides opportunities for
caregivers to talk about their problems with others
who truly understand. Practical information on many
issues of concern to family caregivers will be presented
at each group session.

“‘Hopefully, these group experiences will reduce the
caregiver's stress and make the caring of an aged
mother or father a rewarding experience for
everyone,’’ said Howard.

The group meets Wednesdays from | to 3 p.m. at
North Lonsdale United Church, 3380 Lonsdale Ave.,
North Vancouver. New members are always welcome.
