West Vancouver Celebrates Diamond Jubilee ie | | | | | | New coat-of-arms History and Symbolism of the Arms of West Vancouver The Arms of West Vancouver are based on a design by the late Alfred Bibbs, adopted in 1936. Mr. Bibbs chose symbols evocative of the situation and natural beauty of the municipality: birds, the sea and a ship, with blue and white representing the harbour and sky. He’ selected the motto: BY WISDOM AND COURAGE as a compliment to the Municipal Counc ; In October 1983, the Counci} voted to petition for a grant of arms in anticipation of the municipality's Diamond Jubilee. They wished ©. the Crown grant to incorporate, if possible the design which had been used for nearly fifty years. At the same time the opportunity was taken to enrich the District’s premier symbol with additional elements. Happily, the Kings of Arms were able to grant the shield in virtually unchanged form although the heraldic galley has been edged with gold. The silver cougars with their collars of fir and golden cones represent the varied fauna found throughout West Vancouver. The compartment on which the shield and supporters rest sym- bolizes the rocky shoreline with mountain streams flowing down to meet the waters of the inlet. Above the helmet is the crest, blending : Bibb’s crown of maple leaves and dogwoods with a heraldic pun on one of West Vancouver's most historic names, HOLLYBURN. Experts agree that this new coat of arms is one:of the most beautiful to be devised in Canada in recent years. It should serve the communiiy well for centuries to come. ; Robert Douglas Watt, FHSC Ist Vice-President .
