1 HAVE been a Space
Cadet since the 1950s,
when I used to cut out
the Tom Corbett,
Space Cadet, figures
from the back of
Kellogg’s Corn Flakes
boxes.

Accordingly, when | met
Marc Garneau, Canada's
first astronaut, a few weeks
ago, it was no real surprise
that 1 found myself, for a
change, speechless. } was in
awe, you sce.

I should have interviewed
him, of course. But instead,
I just stood there, gawking.
Here was this impeccable
guy, patiently answering
questions posed by a flock

of kids. He was shorter than
me. Younger, obviously. His

laughter was quick. His eyes.

sparkled. A Gallic charmer,
A hero, for God's sake!
You don’t run into real
heroes all that often. 1 mean,
sure, we’re all legends in our
own minds, and, indeed,

there is such a thing as ex-
istential heroism, whereby,
all by our joneseme, each of
us rises to do battle with fate
cach morning.

But here is a guy who has
been OUT THERE; why has
tidden a torrent of flame:
who has escaped the shackles

of gravity; who has seen the
earth turned into the sky;
who has stared into the
black void between’ the
worlds and stars.

Don't mind me if | wax
lyrical. L admitted right off
the bat I was a Space Cedet,
eh?

Garneau's flight — and
the flight in March of our
next Canuck in space —
serve to give a bit of flesh
and blood to Canada’s
otherwise rather cerebral
approach to the window of
opportunity which the Yanks
have pushed open so far
above our heads.
