One of the most enjoyable
and surprisimg of our ac-
tivities was a three and a half
hour muscie-wrenching trail
mde on a working cattle
ranch in the middle of the
island.

Waterfall-strewn mounta-
ins, lush vegetation, and a
fniendly native guide full of
local lore combined to make
the day memorable.

Kahalua Ranch is the
largest of its kind on Oahu.
Its 4,000 acres house 1100
head of cattle - mostly Black
Angus and Hereford - and
employ six or seven native
ranch hands

Clarence, our guide, was
born on a small village mght

restless horse.

Even the long suffering
Clarence was a bit fed up
after he'd picked up my
fallen hat and camera case
for the sixth time

Clarence speaks Hawanan
to the borses who seem to
understand it better than the
tentative kicks and curses of
the tourtsts

But generally the horses
were well behaved
