By UNITED PRESS CANADA 1.2 million out of work OTTAWA - The number of Canadians out of work soared to a record 1.2 million in March, Statistics Canada reported Thursday, Moving opposition critics to urge immediate federal action to prevent a full- fledged depression. The government statistical agency said the seasonally adjusted jobless rate rose 0.4 percent to a record 9.0 percent last month. The actual number of unemployed also leaped to record levels in March, hitting 1,228,000 - up 24.9 percent from the March 1981 jobless level of 983,000. The jobless total adjusted for seasonal variations was 1,069,000 - up 59,000 from February. It was the highest unemployment rate and level since Statistics Canada began keeping records, breaking the previous post-depression record of 8.6 percent reached in February. Canadians’ safety assured OTTAWA - The Argentine government has promised to ensure the safety and property of the 10 Canadians living in the Falkland Islands, but the Canadian government has advised them to leave, External Affairs Minister Mark MacGuigan says. “The Argentinians have said they will indeed assure any Canadians may leave and if there is any damage to their property, they will be compensated,” MacGuli- gan told reporters. As a flotilla of British warships steamed toward the South Atlantic islands with the intention of retaking them from the Argentine invaders, MacGuigan said he did not know whether the Canadians would choose to stay in the event of war, but added Argentina had promised to “safeguard their rights”. Medical Coordinator Dr. Jim Corbett, said the delay came at a time when scann- ing services at other hospitals were overloaded and neurological units were under pressure. “Vancouver General Hospital has told us it is hav- ing to move patients out of critical care units into wards when they really shouldn't be moved. “This is because neurological patients are coming in the front door much faster than they can leave by the side door.” “We are not asking Vic- toria to give us authority to purchase the equipment. They have already done that,” said board member Maurice Fellis. “We. are simply asking them to free an amount to help us finish a project for which our auxiliary, and the community, have raised over $200,000, and the govern- ment has committed the balance. “With the pressure we are putting on other institutions, delaying the money makes no economic sense.” Michael Whelton said he felt LGH had “sat on its hands long enough”, and the board agreed.
