Fibreglas shingles making
dramatic impact on market

FIBREGLAS ROOFING
shingles have been a part of
the roofing market for de-
cades, but in the last five
years their impact on the
cedar shake and = shingle
market has been dramatic.

Cedar roofing has declined
from a 20% market share in the
United States five years ago to an
all-time low of 3% in this last
year,

Concrete roof tiles, metal tiles
and other high-grade materials
have made their own dent in cedar
sales but the evoluiion of
Fibreglas shingles with that shake
look have created an affordable
alternative to the cedar roof.

Fibreglas shingles were  pio-

neered in the U.S. market and
some of the very best shingles are
still American-made. These
shingles typically use a Fibreglas
mat, as opposed to the organic
mat used in standard asphalt
manufacture,

{n addition, ceramic granules
are used in the process for both
esthetic and technical reasons. The
large granules enhance the earth
tone colors and provide depth to
the shingle, while allowing for the
class ‘A’ fire rating which is
standard with Fibreglas shingles.

Fibreglas gives resistance to
blistering, rolling, curling, and
moisture absorption.

The qualities of Fibreglas
shingies allow for the manufac-
turers to provide up to 35 years of
warranty. This compares to a total

As a roofing material, shakes
and shingles are starting to lose
the faith of the public, say many,
largely because roofs made of
these materials are not lasting as
long as‘they used to.

Western Red Cedar shakes
should last for ‘‘many decades,’’
but many owners of cedar roofs
applied in the last 10 years are
finding that they are replacing
their roofs prematurely.

When it comes to roofing there
are two factors. The first is quali-
ty of materials and the second is
the auality of application.

No matter what grade of shakes
or shingles you buy, a certain per-
centage is permitted to be off-
grade without breaching the
grading rules. Nonetheless, this
‘off-grade material does not con-
form to the building code, and
shouid not be installed.

With pricing of cedar roofing
being very tight, roofers try to
maximize the use of materials.
They consider themselves to be
roofers and not graders.
Therefore, the inexperienced
roofer will often allow inferior
materials to be applied.

There are alternative cedar pro-
ducts, but Fibreglas shingles have
a technical edge. Pressure-treated
shakes or shingles will ensure no
tot but will not guarantee the in-
stallation process and are as good
as the shingies which are chosen
to be treated.

Fibreglas shingles on the other by
hand are capable of reproducing
the look of hand-split shakes or
sawn shingles while retaining the
advantages cf a man-made pro-
duct.

These shingles employ tech-
niques such as random overlay
tabs and a sculptured wood grain
surface to emulate the sawn
shingle.
