22 - Friday, June 19, 1992 - North Shore News HOME & GARDEN Safety lessons well-received THE DISTRICT of North Vancouver Fire Safety House school programs have been completed for another year and were wel- comed with enthusiasm by students all over North Vancouver. We took the fire safety house to every public elementary school and taught the ‘Plan to get out alive’’ lesson to every student in Grades | through 7 (approximate- ly 8,000 students). The lesson began in the upstairs bedroom, where we demonstrated the correct procedures for escap- ing from the home in the event of a fire as we sleep. Various safety habits were also explained. These included smoke alarm maintenance, staying low under smoke, sleeping with the door closed, ensuring at least two exits from every bedroom, install- ing fire escape ladders in upper floor bedrooms, and the impor- tance of practising home fire drills at least twice a year. Upon completion of the lesson upstairs, each student was urged 4&4 We were lucky to find 3% who actually practise home fire drills. 99 to exit by way of the second escape route — the window — down the ladder to the family meeting place. After all of the students were out of the house and waiting at the: pre-arranged meeting place, they were asked a number of questions regarding the safety of their environment at home: ‘How many of you and your families practise fire drills at home?’’ We were lucky to find 3% who actually practise home fire drills. “How many practise fire drills at school?” All hands are raised! That is very interesting —- we all practise fire drills at school but generally, once we get home, we neglect to carry on the practice. Why? The answer is simple — their Parents were never taught the im- portance of EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home). But now that kids have been shown the procedures of home fire escape planning, they celebrates “HORSESHOE BAY DAY” with . If your children have been through the fire safety house, ask them to teach you about EDITH, then practise a fire drill by direc- ting all of the family members to get into their beds (after closing the bedroom door, of course). Then with the use of a long stick or broom handle, push the test button on your smoke alarm. The following chain of events should occur. @ A family member opens a door just a crack to check for smoke in the hallway (tell him/her the haliway is filled with smoke, to close the door, then take the se- cond exit out). The easiest retaining wall you'll ever build. A mortarless, stackable concrete block retaining wall system. Do it yourself or we'll install it for you. © two colours to from @ Have all of the family members meet at the family meeting place. Make a note of how long the evacuation took. e@ Discuss EDITH and identify any problems. Do all the upper floor bedroom occupants have a safe way of reaching the ground? Was there any confusion? Now is the time to resolve these problems, not during a fire. When you conduct your first fire drill at home, chances are you will find that it is an enjoyable, fun experience for the entire fami- ly, and a unique way in which to earn life safety skills — as a fam- ily. Listen to the young members of your family. They might teach you something you have never been taught!
