Meanwhile, in the Upworld,
his mother and friends are trying
to find a way to help Jay come
back.

“During this season he has
come out of a coma a few times
so far for brief periods,” says
Lazer. “But he always finds him-
self having to go back and save
his friends.

“In that respect, the story is
really an action/adventure.”

And that suits Lazer just fine,
A fan of such films such as
Raiders of the Lost Ark and Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,
and TV shows The Fugitive and
The Prisoner, Lazer revels in the
opportunity to model aspects of
The Odyssey after his faves.

“What I really loved about
those movies and those series
was that they were driven by plot
and character and there was a
strong bond that existed between
: humor and danger,” he says. .
“That's the type of thing we try
~ and get.”

For Lazer, once his ideas are_
off the page and onto the set, the
_ experience can either be, “great:
or terrifying. .

his nine-year-old son is a great
help when it comes to scripting
the pre-teen characters, “He
keeps me honest,” says Lazer.

“Also, it's a matter of having
to trust and remernber my own
childhood and adolescence.
When it’s successful, the shaw
works on many levels.

“Both the kicls and their par-
ents get something different out

of it and that gives them things to

talk about — that's what | like
about it: there are no easy
answers.”
