Complaint against News dropped before hearing A COMPLAINT to the B.C. Press Council against the North Shore News over a March 24, 1993, column by Doug Collins has been dropped. The complaint, initially filed with the council by Terence Dawson, was withdrawn following a detailed response sent to the complainant by News managing editor Timothy Renshaw. Ina June 15, 1993, letter to the News, council executive secretary Gerald Porter stated that Dawson had instructed the council that he was ‘not prepared to hear his complaint at a public adjudica- tion. His reluctance to carry his complaint forward came after a night’s reflection....”” Collins’ March 24 column ques- uoned the influence homosexual lobby groups now have ‘in how the media report on AIDS and other issues. Dawson complainea to the council that the column was ‘‘per- sonally offensive, highly bigoted, homophobic and full of gross ex- aggerations and inaccurate report- ing. In his written response to Dawson’s complaint, Kenshaw agreed that the. column ‘'was unsettling and perhaps at times crude and offensive to scme; ... it ‘pulled no punches and. took no prisoners... ‘*But it also did what a good newspaper column should do: it raised issues and inspired a frank exchange of ideas on subjects that Recycle BC RECYCLING HOTLINE 732-9258 | NORTH SHORE News manag- ing editor Tim Renshaw. have, through the work of self- interest groups and’ outspoken minorities, become largely off- limits for the mainstream media.... “Mr. Collins’ columns may not be to everyone's liking; they may in fact be to a lot of people's ex- treme disliking. “But they do what they are supposed to do; generate discus- sion and passionate response from their readership. “To deny the majority of our readers that service because of the vehement objections of an outspoken minority is to deny the public a truly free press.”” The B.C. Press Council’s main purpose is to consider complaints about the press that have not been resolved between complainants and the newspapers involved. The council is pledged to main- tain press freedom and serve as a medium of understanding between the press and the public. “SUCEESS GRNPET ELERMIMG “Introductory Offer” Have your. living and dining room professionally steam-cleaned with our TRUCK MOUNT SYSTEM call for details. 986-6588 : 1976 * Some restrictions may apply :: EARTH aE 91928.
