MW - Wednesday, February 24, FORA - North Shore News SPORTS NS Winter Club Flames settle for split in semi-finals THE NORTH Shore Winter Club Flames had to setthe for a split in its best-of-five semi-final series with the Grandview Steelers over the weekend, winning the series opener 4-3 in overtime and then dropping a 6-4 decision. At the Winter Club Feb. 20, it was a goal by Justin George two minutes and 58 seconds into over- time that lifted the Flames to their 4-3 victory over the Steelers in the first game of the series. Throughout most of the game, the Flames dominated the play, but were unable to capitalize on many good scoring opportunities and were only one for 12 on the power play. In the first period, while out- shooting the Steelers 15-5, the Flames’ only scoring came at the 12:36 mark with Ken Savage scor- ing from Kelly Lawrence and Wade Bartok for a 1-0 lead after one period. Grandview hit the scoreboard with the equalizer just past the three-minute mark of the middle frame, but the Flames took com- mand again with two goals in just under three minutes. At 5:18, Lawrence triggered a Dan Payne pass for a 2-! Jead and then the Flames added their only power-play marker at 8:51 as Payne picked up goaltender Gary Knight's pass at mid-ice and fed it to Mario Abella, who took it in for the score. But just over a minute later, the Steelers pulled to within a goal again to close out the scoring in the period trailing 3-2, After the teams traded goals ear- ly in the final frame —- Grandview scoring on the power play at 1:01 and Payne countering from Scott Higginson 30 seconds later — the Steelers added three unanswered goals, the last one into an empty net with 11 seconds remaining, for the 6-4 final.
