Mah saved the lives of a family
of three in May when she came
across a car idling in a closed
garage at about 5 a.m. on May

Mah was delivering newspa-
pers with a partner in 3
Northlaads acighborhood of
North Vancouver. They. could
s¥e no onc in the garage.

Mah and her partner
thought someone might have
been warming up the car in the
garage attached to the home.
They checked on the car about
45 minutes later when they
returned from delivering their

the doorbell and banged on
the door. Nobody answered.

She went to a nearby
Chevron statio; on Mount
Seymour Parkway and phoned
police. About a half hour later,
a North Vancouver Mountie
called back to thank Mah and
her partner. Carbon monoxide
had entered the home.

The son had started the
sarcly-used car the night before
with plans of going out. He
forgot about the running vehi-
cle and went to bed.

North Vancouver RCMP
Const. Heidi Hoffman said the
car was so hot it could not be
touched.

Cupid’s steady hand brought
Doreen Beaton together with
her childhood crush, Rod
Macdonald, many yeats after
she first was smitten.

Macdonald was on the
cover of the Valentine’s Day
edition of the Star Weekly mag-
azine in 1942.

In the foreground was a
handsome air force mam dis-
playing a crackerjack salute and
stunning smile. She fell in love.

Many years later she met
Macdonald and earned that he
was the man from the maga-
zine cover all those years ago.
Macdonald had also kept a
copy of the cover.

Doreen fainted with the
realization that her naive
young wish had come true.

Another ineredible fact
about this particular Star
Weekly was that it was pub-
lished on Doreen’s birthday:
Valentine’s Day.

Doreen and Rod
Macdonald have been married
for 35 happy years now.

Kaya Hama, 17 months old
when she fell 45 metres from
the Capilano Suspension
bridge on Sept. 22, survived

the plunge unscathed.

Her mother Wadia, who
was carrying the child at the
time, remains under police
criminal investigation.
