MANY people think _ that all old peopte live in nursing homes or, as they are now known, long-term care facilities. However, most: seniors live on their own and only about 10% of us need to “have daily care from profes- sional helpers. While many people may say “I don’t ever want to go - to a home,” they might be pleasantly surprised if they "find such a move is neces- sary because of failing .- health. : “Recently, I visited two very: different facilities in: ‘our community and T heard _ from lively groups of oider “ people who enjoy their — omes and are busy helping to run activities in their,” buildings. : ~. The Inglewood ‘Care Centre is a much older building, which has been regularly expanded and ren- - ovated as the needs of its residents changed. Many eople have lived there for a” long time. One person is “ just starting her 26th year. The Inglewood Resident ~ Council is involved in plan- ning for many activities‘on a regular basis, such as‘craft workshops, bingo, exercise . programs and bus trips. These events are listed on a calendar which is distributed to cach person’s room: by a council member. Another idea thought up by the council is a welcom- ing committee, When new people move into the build- ing a resident will show them around, and give them a package of small items to make them feel at home. Residents are involved in. many other activities such as tending the garden and feeding birds ( both inside and outdoors). This council is also very busy planning for their bazaar on Nov. 26 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. They will fave a sale of poinsettias, : baking, crafts, a-bottle draw and other prizes and 4 tea. In the two brief visits I * had with the residents in these facilities, I was really impressed with the number of activities they get involved with, and the way in which their wishes are OSTEOPOROSIS RESEARCH CENTRE although few BC women have had access to bone density testing, experts recommend evaluation of postmenopausal women ') at risk. - - FREE bone density testing is offered to volunteers eligible fer an "osteoporosis clinical trial.
