Zamboni-load of new titles, ranging from farm ‘teamers to first team all-stars. The - following four books are al! in the fatter _ category to varying degrecs. : OUR GAME * The best on the bench is Our Game, a 270-page compilation of 30 fiction entries; some complete small stories, oth- ers excerpt from novels. All share hockey as their theme. Edited by Doug Beardsley, Our Game: An All-Star Collection of Hockey Fiction, features the works of some of Canada’s top writers, including Roy MacGregor, Hugh MacLennan, Morley Callaghan, W.P. Kinsella and Roch Carrier. The stories cover a wide range of top- ics relating to the game, from pure adula- renewed . interest -in Canada’s national _ ew McCredié tion (Clark Blaise’s I’m: Dreaming of Rocket Richard) to romanticized senti- mentality (Wayne Johnston’s The Divine Ryans) to the outright bizarre (Mark Anthony Jarman’s Righteous Speedboat). There isn’t a second rounder among the bunch. And for goalies, and cvery par- ent who has ever had their child play net, Rudy Thauberger’s Goalic strikes a sentiment deep inside the chest protector. Great writing. Great subject. Great book. HOCKEY FOR DUMMIES With no intention to slight our neighbors to the south, ’ this softcover book should ~ be called “Hockey for Americans.” Written by John Davidson and John Steinbreder and published by U.S.-based Dummies Press, Hockey for Dummies is an interesting, albeit introductory, excr- cise on the game of hockey. In fairness, there is some Canadian content: Wayne Gretzky and Mike Myers authored the foreward and preface respec- tively, and, of course, the NHL all-time record statistics in the back of the 376- page book are dominated by Canadian players. The book covers a lot of ice, including chapters on “The Ten Best Minor League Players”, “Pads and Pucks: Gearing Up”, “Rules of the game”, and “Intimidation and Hitting.” (Without giving away too much, Johnny Bower gets the nad as the best ever minor leaguer. The price may be a litte steep for a softcover ($26.99), but the in-depr star pages at the back are a great reference. TO MEN N THE ICE.
