Pepper position awaits

THE RCMP are lobbying the City

of North Vancouver to ban the sale
and use of pepper spray.

North Vancouver RCMP Insp. Gordon
McRae asked council in a letter to pass this
motion: “Thar the Federation of Canadian

Municipalities request the Federal Minister of

Justice to pass in Order In Council ro clearly
make the posession, sale and use of all types
of Olcoresin Capsicum spray, pepper spray and
similar products a Prohibited Weapon under
the Criminal Code.”

Although council will make no decision
unul it gets more information trom the Joint
Police Liaison Commitice, most members did-
n't seem keen on banning pepper spray.

“PE know women who carry pepper spray
around, particularly when thev’re walking,”
Coun. Barbara Sharp said. “There's other
weapons out there. The police should be get-
tag guns out of high school lockers.”

In North Vancouver District, council sup-
ported Monday a move that could limic the
current cas avatlability of pepper spray.
Council voted to ask the Federation of
Canadian Municipalities to request the federal
government to better regulate the prohibition
of Pepper spray.
