By Layne Christensen Community Reporter AFTER 24 years in com- munity television on the North Shore, local per- sonality Martyn Stubbs was given his walking papers last week. Stubbs was one of 20 employ- ces in technical and supervisory positions at community televi- sion studios throughout the Lower Mainland that were laid off by Rogers Cablesystems on Nov. 19. At the same time, the Toronto-based company announced the closure of five of its 11 TV studios in the Lower Mainland. Rogers’ North Shore facility, which is on Pemberton Avenue in North Vancouver, escaped closure but suffered the loss of Stubbs along with another employee and the transfer of one other. Local viewers knew Stubbs as Buzz Miller, co-host of the popular late-night alternative music show Sound Proof, which aired on community TV through the ’80s and into the 90s. More recently, Stubbs was station manager of the Pemberton facility. With the Rogers takeover of Shaw Cable last July, he became programming supervisor. The layoffs were necessary for the cable company to con- solidate its operations, Piccini said on Wednesday. “These were very, very difficult decisions,” she said. Piccini added that the consotidation would not have a major impact on the coverage of local events. “Customers or viewers won’t notice much of a difference in community television programming,” she said. Replacing Stubbs as programming supervisor is George Lacny, who Piccini described as having “long years in com- munity programming and a great deal of skill.” Lacny held a similar position at Rogers’ Surrey tacility. Stubbs could not be reached for comment to press time Thursday.
