Youth sings in Memphis

A self-proclaimed “triple threat”
from Squamish competed last
weekend at the international youth
star search contest in Memphis.

John Amenta, a singing, dancing, acting wun-
derkind from just up the highway won the chance
to compete in Memphis after winning the 1996
PNE youth talent search contest this summer.

He scored well on his performance of an
Italian love song, but not high enough to beat
out all of the other 18 acts.

A quartet from Memphis won the title,

He did win an opportunity to audition for
television and radio with CBS while in
Memphis, but he turned it down. He wasn’t
sure he could work it into his schedule since
he’s currently on full scholarship at UBC
studying French and theatre.

“I'm working on my back-up degree,” says
Amenta, “Then I can go down there and no
one can say ‘he’s just a singer,’ or ‘he’s just a
dancer,’ or ‘he’s just an actor’.”
