A handful of protesters carrying placards that read “Cancer is cute’ and “Smoking is sexy” stood at the entrance to the Hyatt, the location of the cigarette- company sponsored event. The foundation was set up in '92 to provide financial support for Canadian design talent. A total of $1.5 million has been distributed since that time. The amount each designer reportedly receives is between $10,000 and $40,000. This year's urant recipients -—— Jacqueline Conoir. Patricia Fieldwalker, Nancy Lord Cinema and Virani -- presented their lines alongside previous winners, Limbo, Poorboy and Zonda Nellis. Standouts were Virani’s tailored wool pantsuits for fall °96, — Ficldwalker’s sensuous silk robes and slips and Nellis’ exotic burnt-out velvet evening looks. Lord's leathers and city separates drew loud applause for their easy wearability. Limbo's New York-taxi- yellow slicker and PVC hipsters racked up points for trendiness. The evening also featured the announcement of °96 grant recipients. Jacqueline Conoir, Poorboy, Patricia Fieldwalker and Nancy Lord were again awarded grants. They are joined this year by first-time grant recipients Ron Leal and Catherine Regehr.
