A SIX-WEEK-LONG project to make improvements to an existing retaining wall on Deep Cove’s waterfront has left a canoe and kayak rental opera- tion in disarray. By Bruce Methven Contributing Writer The retaining wall is located along the foreshore between the government dock and the Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre at the south end of the beach area. On Wednesday, Deep Cove's tranquil waterfront was disturbed when excavating cquipment perched above the water beside the canoe and kayak rental shop began digging the beach away. The manager of the rental shop, Brian Thornas, said the disruption has made it difficult for him to carry on his business. “The construction is very dis- tracting, and as if the noise isn’t bad enough, we had a kayak lesson last night with a full class who had to wade through murky water where there used to be beach,” said Thomas. The three-year employee said the _ rental operation is only open from a April to October and this is the A - busiest time of year. VHS, 2 - Sunday, August 7, 1994 - North Shore News Deep Cove waterfront work bad timing for boat business Deep Cove Canoe has {4 kayaks and 18 canoes, all of which Thomas said are frequently rented out on summer weekdays at S18 each for two hours on the water. “The timing on this is pathetic.” an angry Thomas said of the con- struction project. “Em considering cancelling classes.” he suid. adding that to do so would put the shop’s three kayak instructors out of work. District of North Vancouver pro- ject engineer Marcel Bernier said the start of the waterfront work was delayed by lengthy negotiations with the Port of Vancouver. “We had hoped to do it a lot ear- lier, but‘lease arrangements with the port had to be completed,” Bernier said. Once approved, the project could not be delayed until after the sum- mer months, according to Bernier. “There are better construction condi- tions at this time of year,” he said. Bernier said the improvements to the waterfront have been on the planning books “for quite some time.” and are part of the Deep Cove enhancements that got under way several years ago. Present construction on the waterfront calls for the removal of existing boulders and sand from the beach area and excuvation down to a 40-year-old retaining wall. A new retaining wall will be built on the original and extended to the outer edge of the boathouse. Excavated beach sand will then be repiaced at the completion of construction. The new wall will be 24 metres (78 ft.) long and will include a new ramp and stairway for improved access to the water.
