Hockey leagues approve
bodychecking restrictions

AT ITS annual gencral ‘meeting,
held in Abbotsford on Sunday,
May 30, the Pacific Coast Ama-
teur Hockey Association voted to
remove bodychecking from al! of
its C leagues, or house-level
minor hockey.

Bodychecking will continue to
be permitted at the A and B, or
rep leveis, above the PecWee age
group (over 13 years of age).

controversial rule change which
was supported by the Vancouver
Thunderbird and the Arbutus
Club Minor Hockey Association.

still believe that bodychecking has
to be part of the game,” said Don
Morrison, ‘presiuent of the North
Vancouver association, ‘‘but we
feel that most of the kids iv the C
leagues are playing for just recre-
ation and enjoyment.”*

Most adult recreational nockey
programs are already non-contact.

Although most minor hockey

programs throughout the Lower

Mainland are full and have long
waiting lists, Morrison believes
that this change will keep some of
the teens in minor hockey a little
longer.
