Jury selects artists TEN ARTISTS have been selected to represent the North Shore, Whistler, Squamish and Bowen Island at the B.C. Festival of the Arts, May 22-26 in North Van- couver District. The selections were made at the North Shore Spring Jurving held at Klee Wyck. The event is spon- sored by the community arts councils of North and West Van- couver, Shows made great combo From page 28 to the grand waterfront locale of the Vancouver Trade and Conven- tion Centre; throw in some special events celebrating the durable marriage of wine and food; sprinkle with a liberal number of wine buffs; snobs and aficionados; and channel the proceeds to a worthy cultural cause. Who could ask for more? Well... | might ask for more viticultural accoutrements. Something a little more to chew on than thin slices of French bread and a worthy, though pedestrian, pate. Last year, for instance, there was a lively herb butter that helped the French bread rise to the occasion. And J might aiso ask for a place to sit down, a small alcove wherein the weary oenophile might momentarily doff wine fes- tival slippers, rest tannic acid-pit- ted tongue and ponder the com- plexities of the various vintages and varietals he has been so carefully assessing. But then | would be quibbling. The Vancouver International Wine Festival has been a brilliant success from the start. It has in- troduced all segments of Lower Mainland society to a vast interna- tional array of wines and wine folk; it has established Vancouver as one of Canada’s foremost wine centres; and it has ensured area restaurant customers of seeing evermore informed and interesting wine selections in their local res- taurants. 1 ventured to this year's wine festival in search of pinot noir. | made the acquaintance of many, perhaps too many, and struck up conversations with some other fascinating and surprising members of the red wine family, many of regal lineage, because as one astute wine festival patron was overheard to say: ‘‘! didn’t come here to drink $10 bottles of wine.” Indeed, my dear, nor did I: *tron Herse 1987 Cabernets ($24.15): a wonderfully complex blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes from this elegant California winery. *Signorello Vineyards 1988 Pinot Noir ($25): a lovely rich, carefully made pinot noir, the best of the night. Again from California. *Schug 1983 Napa Valley Pinot Noir ($23): Sounds like a dance craze from the early ‘60s, but this pinot noir had the kind of depth and character that makes friends easily. *Don Maximiano Reserva Cabernet 1986 ($10.95): Ex- cellent value again from Chile, land of first-class economy wines. * Bodegas Palacio 1981 Gran Reserva (320.95): Spanish style and spirit. At the adjacent Viva ‘91, where ties and sports coats gave way to open collars and open spaces, there were more security forces but fewer display stalls this year. The result was more elbow room, but less chaotic excitement. Still, the breadth of both events makes the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival and the Viva food shaw an unbeatable viticultural and culinary one-two combination for the hungry masses.
